You could just as easily suggest that taking drugs, smoking and drinking lead teens to spend more time on Facebook. Or, more likely, it's a third factor. The general type of teen who is more likely to be active on a social network is also more likely to be active in the sort of social activities that teens are involved in -- which (despite some adults' denial) still includes drinking, smoking and taking drugs (sex too, I imagine). But pinning the blame on social networking is silly. I would bet that the same kids probably use text messaging more often. Would CASA also say that text messaging "puts kids at increased risk." Correlation is not causation and since the "National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse" is based at Columbia University, you'd think that someone there was familiar with this basic concept. Apple and possibly some San Francisco police officers may have overstepped legal bounds in attempting to retrieve yet another missing iPhone prototype that was reportedly left behind at a San Francisco bar. The SFPD has now begun an internal investigation into allegations that officers were involved in a late July search of a San Francisco home where Apple had apparently tracked the missing device.

A new venture by 4chan founder Chris Poole intends to be both social and fun.
Too many social sites today are more work than play: another in-box to keep up with, another place to trudge through friend connections, another status bar to update.
Chris Poole may have brought the fun back to social with his new site, Canv.as, which offers users "a place to share and play with images" that's built with a fierce commitment to spontaneous creativity. Poole is the 23-year-old founder of 4chan, a site famous for embodying the Internet's id in all its glory and squalor. 4chan's anonymous community has been behind a number of pranks and Internet "memes," including "Rickrolling." With Canv.as, Poole hopes to bring his countercultural perspective to a site that will gain a mainstream audience, and make a profit. In the process, he also hopes to remind people that socializing is supposed to be fun. "The idea of play was very important to us," Poole says. A Canv.as user is greeted with a wall of images—some pretty, some funny, some political. He or she can either manipulate those images using lightweight image-editing software built into the site or upload a new image for anyone to play with. Users can vote on different images by giving them virtual stickers, and add comments. They can also join groups devoted to specific types of content. The process is simple and inviting, and it resists efforts to control the results of any contribution. Perhaps most importantly, Canv.as bucks the trend of forcing users to post under their real names, or even post under a consistent identity at all. "Identity is not black and white," Poole says. "It's a rainbow. There's a whole spectrum of possibilities." Users can choose whether to post content using their profile, or anonymously. The anonymous option gives someone the opportunity to test the waters, gauging response without having his or her reputation on the line. Users can also decide to claim results after the fact, attaching a name if an effort has been well-received. Poole believes this encourages people to participate more. He says, "Most people have been conditioned to be afraid of the response that they will get. [In Canv.as], you're rewarded for your success as opposed to being punished for your failures." Poole also dismisses the advertising revenue model that sustains most social sites, saying that display ads are "not interesting." What he does find interesting is the business model made famous by Zynga, which sells small virtual items to people who play its games. Google has removed Grooveshark from the Android Market. The move, which comes many months after Apple kicked the music app from its App Store, has to do with (what else?) accusations from several top music labels that Grooveshark violates copyright law. It's unclear whether Google plans to also remotely remove the app from Android smartphones on which it's already been installed, something that Google has the power to do but has only in the past used to get rid of malware-ridden apps. In response to questions regarding Grooveshark's removal from the Android Market, a Google spokesperson only had this to say: "We remove apps from Android Market that violate our terms of service." The spokesperson did not mention what violations Grooveshark has committed in relation to the Market's terms of service. Google has also, understandably, not said anything about this happening in response to pressure from the music industry -- yet what else could have triggered this removal? In an interesting coincidence, Google is set to outline its anti-piracy efforts before the House of Representatives' Judiciary committee today. Google has been accused numerous times that it profits from piracy by allowing 'pirate' sites to post Google ads. The company is expected to deny this as well as issue a tougher stance on piracy at today's hearing. As for Grooveshark, it looks like it's quickly running out of mobile app stores on which it's allowed to exist.
